In recent years, it seems that phone manufacturers have favored CPUs and sensors with high stats. Sometimes, the high number is not necessarily proportional to the quality but perhaps this is as a scheme to attract and create a reputation in the market. Samsung is intending to increase the sensor amount to 576 MP, they are still not satisfied with the intended 200MP sensor of the Isocell HP1 for now. The number of sensors can be up to hundreds of megapixels. As recently announced by Samsung, the company intends to create a 576 MP sensor by 2025.
We often think that the more megapixels, the higher the pixel density, and therefore the image quality will be better. However, to have a good photo, it is necessary to consider factors such as lens, color accuracy, exposure, white balance. Even with the 12MP sensor from Google and Apple, it works very well, even better than the big cameras.
Samsung’s Executive Vice President and Head of Sensor Business, Yongin Park, said that increasing the number of pixels inside the same sensor size is difficult. To do that, it is necessary to increase the size of the module cluster and reduce the size of each point, causing the image to be blurred.
Although Samsung knows there are many obstacles to creating such a sensor, the company still hopes to create a 576 MP sensor by 2025. They have new “Chameleon Cell” pixel binning technology and state-of-the-art technologies but it is also difficult to create a sensor with such a large number of pixels.
Samsung should focus on improving the quality issues of its current photography technologies because it’s still not good. There are still four years left for them to research and launch the product as of their announcement and during that time the trend of mobile photography will have changed.
