Xiaomi’s 11T series to have four years of update

Flaship duo Xiaomi 11T and 11T Pro phones will have three generations of Android OS updates and four years of security updates, the Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi announced on September 9.

They are due for debut at a virtual launch event on September 15.

While considering the possibility of giving similar treatment to its already launched devices, except the cheapest Android phones, Xiaomi is very likely to offer them to flagship devices like Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra.

It is not a simple task for Xiaomi and its team to provide system updates and security patches to all of its previous smartphone models. However, the prospect of this challenge and meeting the desires of our customers is exciting”, said Xiaomi’s head of product & technology Albert Shan.

With the continuous improvement made to smartphone hardware, the life cycle of a smartphone is gradually lengthening, meaning users aren’t required to replace their smartphones as frequently. For this reason, more consumers place great importance on receiving the latest operating system updates, along with the latest features”, he added.

Other smartphone makers like Samsung and Oneplus also promised four years of security patches for their devices. Samsung offered three years of OS updates for most of its lineup.

The mid-end Nokia XR20, which was launched in the US last month, committed to four years of monthly security updates.

Xiaomi confirmed that 11T Pro will be its first affordable flagship to support 120W fast charging. It is empowered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, a 120Hz OLED display, a 5,000mAh battery, and a 108MP main camera.

The standard 11T version is equipped with MediaTek’s 6nm Dimensity 1200 chipset and a 64MP main camera.

The move is forecast to start off a trend benefiting users of Android flagships with years of security update.
